The major reason firms are hesitant to recruit someone such as Dr. Edwards is that they are afraid. The Equal Employment Opportunity Act was enacted in the United States in 1972, and it had just been issued when Dr. Edwards was seeking work. Companies model their structures after rivals and look for what they do right. With very few disabled hires, companies were taking the risk of whether or not it would greatly affect their business (Harvey et al., 2015). In the case of Dr. Edwards, I believe that the majority of those who turned him down were afraid of employing a professor who wouldn't be able to teach in the manner they expected. People questioned Dr. Edwards because of his disability, which is unjust and discriminatory, but I believe their motives were motivated by fear rather than their actual emotions for disabled workers.
